For those of you that don’t know us that well we’re Pete and Emma Hulme. We’re both from the North West of England and met whilst studying Medicine at Manchester University in 2001. We got married in July 2005 and have a home in South Manchester. For the past 2-3 years we have both been working as doctors for the Pennine Acute Trust on different rotations and this year Emma has also been doing a masters degree in Public Health and a diploma in Family Planning. Pete’s main medical interests are in Acute Care and Infectious Diseases whereas Emma’s interests are in Womens Health. We have been members of Ivy Cottage Church, Didsbury for the past 7 years and we have felt a strong calling for us to use our gifts as doctors to serve God/ people of need overseas. We have both been on short term mission trips to Africa and have a strong passion for the nation especially in the field of healthcare and the injustice we have seen. We felt it was right for us to take a break from our training in the UK to pursue our calling and we are going to be working for a year at Kuluva Mission Hospital, Uganda. Our roles will be working with two Ugandan doctors in the hospital (200 bed) and helping run community clinics, Emma is also hoping to develop the womens health which had been started by a previous missionary. Furthermore we will be supporting the local church in ministry and discipleship. As part of the year we will be studying Tropical Medicine at Liverpool University for three months to develop our skills and prepare us for further service abroad in the future. During our time in Uganda we hope to……..
-
Show God’s love to this community through our work and see God working in the lives of hospital staff and patients.
-
Develop our faith and understanding of God and learn to rely more fully on him in our daily life.
-
Improve the hospitals provision of healthcare by assisting the Ugandan doctors and nurses.
-
Build lasting relationships within the church and hospital community.
-
Develop our clinical skills and experience in tropical medicine and trauma management.
We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our time in Uganda and we would love to hear from you.
Hi emma and pete. This sounds amazing. It’s great to hear what you’ve been up over the last few years and your exciting plans for going to uganda.
Emma – it’s been ages since we’ve been in touch. I’m sorry I never really got back to you about getting together how ever long ago it was. I’m half way through my nurse training now, it’s all going really well and looking forward to qualifying in just over a year, although i’m not sure of what area of nursing I want to pursue yet. My next placement is on ICU, hoping it’s going to be a good one.
I’m looking into the possibility of going to Uganda for my elective placement, for a few weeks in Sept 2008. My church have friends in Namuwongo, just outside Kampala, and I know a family who have recently moved to Hoima. Both have a near by hospital that I might be able to get involved with. Either way, I’ll look forward to reading about your experiences in Uganda.
Lots of love and blessings to you both.

I meant what I said the other night. You are both lovely people, and It would be good to know you both better. Sadly, Wendy and Myself are far from the best people to know when it comes around to cash, but you can guarantee that we will be both holding you up in our prayers, especially whilst you are away in Uganda.

I really enjoyed reading your blog. It will be a nice way to keep in touch while you are away. I have asked your mum to give you £100 from us. I figure that it’s better to do that than send money from Australia. Love Vin & Maynessa

Hi Pete n Emma, Just to inform u that it was great working with you. Together we did achieve quite allot in helping deliver Health care to the people of West Nile. I must commend you for the courage you had in taking up this calling. Now sadly i might also be leaving at the end of March 2010 after 9years of service at Kuluva. I Will always keep you posted of the new developments, my prayer is to see more young Doctors come to get hands-on exposure in a challenging situation just as you did and there by learning more in the Medical practice while the population benefits as well. God Bless you!
